In this hands-on activity, your students will construct 6 stem-and-leaf plots. The activity is structured to prevent or correct misconceptions about stem-and-leaf plots. Once students physically create these graphs by cutting apart the digits that represent the stems and the leaves, they will understand how to pull data out of a stem-and-leaf plot. We always love to see the light bulbs go on! The graphs use a variety of data set types, including 2 and 3-digit whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
